Creating Learning Communities is, according to Bill Ellis (one of the "doers" of this group), this body of work was inspired by Ivan Illich's book, "Deschooling Society," that was written in the 1970s. Illich pointed out, as did Paulo Friere about the same time, that conventional schooling amounts to little more than "brain washing future citizens with the culture of the past, preventing natural social evolution." Thus A Coalition for Self-Learning set out in 1999 to "deschool" society.  Its mantra is: "Envision a world without schools. Create a world of learning communities." (And I, as a long-time unschooling homeschooling mom -- having extricated my eldest daughter from the dog-eared halls of public education way back in the early 1980s and being presently in the throes of upbringing four more fine young citizens exactly this same way -- highly recommend this Website and commend its self-learning modality of thought.)

This fall, the 5th annual "Symbolic Monarch Butterfly Migration" will be launched in collaboration with Mexico City's Museo del Nino (Children's Museum) and classrooms across North America. You're invited to join the celebration as students across the United States and Canada create thousands of paper butterflies that will "migrate" to Mexico for the winter. See the website for  more information:

Home Schooling in the United States: 1999 -- This report, based on data from the Parent Survey of the National Household Education Survey Program, 1999, contains information about the characteristics of home schooled children and their families, parent's reasons for homeschooling, and public school support for homeschoolers.

The National Home Education Network is chock-full of topical articles and resource info for and about homeschoolers. To read a sample copy of their excellent email newsletter, click here

On this page, called Newspaper Icosahedron, you will find a really neat learning project PLUS a whole bunch of links to interesting stuff about geometry (such as the architectural structure of viruses).

A Chemical Engineering Timeline traces historically significant events from 440 BC (when Democritus proposed the concept  of an atom to describe the indivisible and indestructible particles that were thought to compose the substance of all things) to date.

Roadside Geology is the subject of this informative article with photos. And it can also be the game plan for a wonderfully invigorating field trip. A visit (with a magnifying glass) to one of the Arkansas places depicted, or just about any "road cut" local to your neck of the woods, is a wonderful way to laze away an educational afternoon. Take along a picnic basket, sketch pad and camera -- or just sit and weave basketsful of daydreams while you watch the children play with rocks.

"Unschooling" as a topic and a practice is near and dear to my heart, and The Unschooling List FAQ offers one of the most comprehensive, well written, and richly insightful dissertations on the subject that I've ever found. In addition, there is a way to sign-up to be on a topically focused interactive email discussion list -- and if you've never been on an "interactive"  list like this you owe it to yourself to sample the experience.

Wanna learn more about the interwoven complexities of being an "astronaut" on this thing called "Spaceship Earth"??? Well the sE Website, focused on the work of Buckminster Fuller (lovingly known as "Bucky" to those of us who hold his life-message near and dear), is filled with plans to develop resources and stimulate ideas to empower our analytical thinking and problem solving skills in harmony with our ever-evolving knowledge about the world we all share.

After this virtual visit, maybe you'd like to continue your space explorations with a look at this article about how the future colonization of Mars is being strategize today, right here on Earth!

When your cyber-vessel lands, you may want to take your class on a Web-flight  field trip to London and a visit with the Sherlock Holmes Museum

And, when you're ready to give your own back yard some well deserved thought, learn more about the Ozarks by strolling though on-line excerpts from the excellent book,  A Living History of the Ozarks. Topics include: The origin of the name Ozarks, the Real Ozarks, the Misunderstood Ozarks, the Allure of the Ozarks, and much, much more.

Ever hear of a "cyberdome"??? It's a planetarium-style theater that seats 170 people, has realtime computer generated movies, and each seat has a 5 button control pad, so the audience can explore the space in realtime.

  • Click here to read about the very first cyberdome, built in Chicago.

  • Click here to visit the Website of the Cyberdome in Wichata, Kansas.

Next, this interactive tutorial about the "The Power of Ten" is awesome!!! And the site it's on is filled with other totally fantastic Science stuff. Really, it's like taking a really neat field trip and is great fun to explore with a small group.

Wanna learn a bit of higher math in a fun  way...??? Build a model of a geodesic dome!!!

Project Gutenberg is a huge online library of classic texts that are available for free download, and the history of how this project came to be is an interesting lesson in itself.

"This is a great GEOGRAPHY lesson," wrote Carol. "It is a mind-boggling testimony to SCIENTIFIC strides of our century.  It is a vivid reminder of environmental issues; no WONDER we don't see the Milky Way like we used to as youngsters! Wherever YOU are 'coming from', this photo of earth at night is for you!"

In the ''free fun and educational games" department, our age-12 daughter highly recommends NeoPets.

And, if you're looking to spend some quality time around the computer, pull up those family chairs and explore JigSawPuzzles.

"Stereograms is a marvelous site - if you like these things and have time to play with them," wrote our loyal friend, Mary Alice. "To view the pictures it is necessary to relax your mind and look deeply into the picture, as if you are trying to see the other side. The 3D view will become stronger and stronger once you begin to see it. Enjoy!"
