CHESS, CIVICS, ENERGY |
An enthusiastic group of chess players, civic proponents and
alternative energy seekers met February 21 in the Community Room of
1st Service Bank in Clinton to challenge each other's thinking with
games and tips offered by Robert Reed, President/CEO of
American Spirit
Enterprises Inc. and former chair of the Libertarian Party
of Arkansas.

When the chess matches concluded, Reed opened the civics portion
of the program with an explanation of 'cost' as defined by
government.
"When you or I think of 'cost'," Reed illustrated, "we think of
purchasing something. Exchanging some of our hard earned dollars for
something of value, like gasoline or bread or milk. But when the
government talks about costs, they use a different definition. For
example, if you choose to homeschool your child, they say that you
cost the district about $6000 because this is the amount of money
that the district won't get from the state."
He said it is important to grasp this concept when considering
any government taxation or spending program, because 'the government
simply doesn't add things up the same way you or I do."
Reed also addressed the importance of individual participation.
Using the recent cigarette tax as another example, Reed noted that
the number of 'private citizens' who had attended the legislative
hearings to express their opinion about this tax could be counted on
one finger of one hand and that in terms of citizens upholding their
civic duty, he found this abysmal. |
"This is a tax on a select segment of the population that proposes
to benefit everyone," Reed said. "The whole idea, no matter if the
tax is on cigarettes or Oreos, is fundamentally un-democratic. It is
unbelievable that the great majority of Arkansas citizens are not
outraged and demanding that such nonsense to stop." Under the
energy heading, Reed addressed the sanity of converting to a
composting toilet which,
he
explained, uses no water and produces high-quality 'odor free'
fertilizer that is ideal for flowers and shrubs. He noted, however,
that under current Arkansas law any house that has running water is
denied the opportunity to install a composting toilet. "This is a
mistake," Reed asserted, citing it as "another law that must be
challenged and changed by us citizens."
Reed also explained the Arkansas Net Metering program which makes
it possible for a homeowner who generates their own electricity to
sell their excess back to Petit Jean, thus lowering their own
monthly electric bill and also reducing the need for the cooperative
to purchase electricity during times of peak power consumption.
He said that the biggest stop-gap to setting up an system to do
this is cost. However, he asserted, by utilizing the leveraging
power of our member-owned cooperative it could be possible to
substantially lower this hurdle.
Reed's presentation was interspersed with questions and open
discussion but concluded at 8pm with an agreement among those
attending to get together for another round of chess and civics on
Saturday, March 14 with time and location to be announced. ~~~ |
At
right: Reed invited several of the folks at the meeting to play a
game which illustrated how planning and cooperation consistently
accumulates as greater rewards for everyone involved. |

INCLEMENT WEATHER
Here in Van Buren County, Arkansas, during the past
12 months, we have had two devastating tornadoes, 2 cataclysmic
floods, and a horrific ice storm. Somewhat the epitome of inclement
weather. Is this evidence of global warming... or karmic
retribution? Perhaps, some would say, a bit of both. Perhaps, I
would suggest, these are one in the same.... ~Christine

CHESS, CIVICS, ENERGY:
February Meeting
CHANGE OF VENUE
A three part program, including chess playing, a
guest speaker on civics and a public forum on energy
self-sufficiency, will be held Saturday,
February 21, in the Community Room of 1st SERVICE BANK, located
across from the Harvest Foods plaza on U.S. Hwy. 65, in Clinton.
Starting things off at 4:30pm, chess players are invited to
bring their own board and game pieces, come alone or with a partner
and pair-up with other enthusiasts for open matches.
At 6:00pm Robert Reed, former chairman of the Libertarian
Party of Arkansas, will address the topic "Civics 101: Who spends
your money?" The informative talk looks at how local government
works and how the decisions of local officials effect every
pocketbook.
7:00 pm will open a discussion about how to make every home
and business in the PJE Cooperative Community 'energy
self-sufficient' -- at least to the degree of being able to
survive when the power goes off -- by and thru full implementation
of and integration with the Arkansas Net Metering Program.
Change of venue was
necessary due to the PJE Community Room currently being
used as a 'staging ground' for the massive electrical repair work
being done in and around Van Buren County resultant of the January
ice storm.
This agenda was appointed during and respective of a public meeting
held January 17, 2009, coordinated by The Committee for Honest Law
Enforcement. All programs are open to everyone free of charge. For
