CLEAN-UP RALLY TURN OUT "GREAT" IN SPITE
OF BITTER COLD
NEWS RELEASE
January 20, 2003
A clean-up rally and “coffee
stop” held Saturday, January 18, 2003, in Van Buren County
turned out 17 volunteers to brave the cold, bag litter, and share a picnic
meal. However, according to organizers, the event had a much greater
purpose than that.
Sponsored by the Van
Buren County Greens and coordinated with the assistance of the Ozark
Liberty Alliance (OLA), this “do something” action was organized to show
support for the massive pro-peace demonstrations that brought together
hundreds of thousands of activists across the nation and around the world
on this same date.
The
local clean-up crew included members of
the Greens, a number of OLA volunteers, and several "interested others"
who had heard about the event and decided to come just to see what it was
all about.
Plans to remove litter
from a one-mile stretch of U.S. 65 previously adopted by the Greens were
abandoned due to the freezing-cold, with a more modest effort dedicated to
cleaning up litter in the roadside park, located on U.S. 65 near the
clean-up mile, where the volunteers had planned to gather for lunch.
“What’s really important
about this,” said OLA volunteer Christine Weiss, “is that over a dozen
people from diverse social and political backgrounds came together in
harmony, shared a common meal, shivered and froze together, worked
side-by-side with each other and exchanged stories about what we want the
world to become. And we were all in agreement that what we want most is
peace.”
Also as a result of the
gathering, the idea was raised that perhaps some sort of ongoing effort
could be developed to “adopt” the park, in accordance with a state
regulated volunteer program called “Adopt A Spot.”
