 MARCH 2008 MEETING
The Spring River Branch of the National League of American Pen Women will meet Wednesday March 5, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. The Spring River Branch membership includes local and regional writers, artists and musicians. The meeting is held in the Cherokee Village Lutheran Church located at the corner of Okmulgee Drive and Cherokee Road.

The March speaker will be Marc Herring, owner of the Ozark Classic Crafts Mall in Hardy. He has been a crafter of walking and hiking sticks since 1980 when he first crafted a hiking stick for a weekend hike with friends.  This lead to crafting hiking sticks over the years for his friends as gifts.

In 1987, Marc was approached at a nature center craft bazaar by a writer for the internationally known magazine “The Crafts Report.”  This encounter with writer, Loretta Rodeschi, changed his life.  Rodeschi encouraged Herring to apply to a true craft art show, namely the Smithsonian Institute Craft Art Show in Washington D.C.  He applied for the show and to his great surprise was accepted for the  craft show to be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce building.

Marc has done commemorative pieces for Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America and donated a matching set to former President George Bush and his wife Barbara. Additionally, Hillary Clinton solicited renowned craft artists to donate a hand crafted craft object to the White House’s permanent Christmas collection.  Marc created a miniature hiking stick to fulfill the request.

Over the years, Marc has participated in other juried craft shows around the country and after an eight year break, is now working his craft in Hardy at the Ozark Classic Crafts Mall where, in addition to his own craft art, he displays the works of over 30 other fine craft artists.  At this month’s Spring River Branch meeting he will bring examples and talk about his walking and hiking sticks. The public is invited to attend.
