On Aging
(AOA), is the federal
agency that oversees, administers, regulates, and in some instances
channels funding to Area Agencies on Aging. The AOA Website provides
details on AOA activities and also provides a directory
listing of over 230 summary descriptions of various organizations that
offer services to seniors, many with the WWW address of the particular
organization's homepage.
American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP),

organization dedicated to helping older Americans achieve lives of
independence, dignity, and purpose. Local chapters, listed in the
telephone directory, sponsor educational programs on crime prevention,
consumer protection, defensive driving, and income tax preparation.
Members may participate in group health insurance programs; auto, life,
and home insurance programs; an investment program; and an annuity
program. The AARP mail-order pharmacy offers members discounts on brand
name and generic prescription medications and a full line of drugstore
products.
American
Cancer Society (ACS), 1599 Clifton

national community-based volunteer health organization dedicated to the
elimination of cancer through research, education, advocacy, and
prevention. Local ACS units sponsor self-help groups, transportation
programs, and limited financial aid. Special programs and services are
offered for breast cancer, laryngectomee, and ostomy patients and
families. Free publications on cancer prevention, detection, and
treatment are available on request.
American
Chiropractic Association, 1701 Clarendon Boulevard,

organization of chiropractic doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and
treatment of problems related to the alignment of the spine. Educational
programs are offered on posture, physical fitness, public health,
occupational safety, and veterans affairs.

conditions of people who are blind and those with visual impairments.
Advocates for educational opportunities, health care services, Social
Security benefits, vocational training, and other health and social
services for blind and visually disabled people. Braille Forum is
published monthly and distributed free to blind, visually impaired, and
interested sighted persons. It is available in Braille, large print,
audiocassette, or IBM-compatible computer disks.
Alzheimer's

sponsors public education programs and offers support services to
patients and families who are coping with Alzheimer's disease (AD),

care for the elderly in residential settings.
Dogs for the

Special Needs Dogs, Home Hearing Dogs, and Certified Hearing Dogs. Each
is specially trained to serve as the ears of people who are deaf. Dogs
are trained to meet the level of need and placed FREE of charge with
qualified applicants. Applicant must be capable to assume full responsibility for day-to-day care of dog after placement.

Senior Citizen's Law Center (NSCLC),

established in 1972 to help older Americans live their lives in dignity
and freedom from poverty through legal work in support of elderly poor
clients, client groups, and Elder Law Attorneys.

Association of Area Agencies on Aging
(N4A), operates the Eldercare Locator, to help caregivers locate
services for older adults in their own communities. The website also
provides late-breaking news on Aging policies in Washington, D.C.
National
Institute on Aging (NIA), is a principal biomedical research agency of the United
States Government. The NIA promotes healthy aging by conducting and
supporting biomedical, social, and behavioral research and public
education.
SeniorCom, is an electronic magazine (e-zine) for
seniors, full of resources and clickable links.
Senior
Law.com, is a Website where senior
citizens, their families, attorneys, social workers, and financial
planners can access information abut Elder Law, Medicare, Medicaid,
estate planning, trusts, and the rights of the elderly and disabled.

Security Online, is the place to go to
get a copy of your personal earnings and benefits statement, a
replacement Social Security card, or get answers to your questions about
Social Security.
Van Buren
County Aging Program, Inc. (VBCAP),
provides senior citizen centers, congregate meals, home delivered meals,
homemaker services, transportation, educational programs and recreation
for seniors in Van Buren County.

low-income seniors, offers Case Worker and Case Management services, and
coordinates the Forever Young At Heart aerobic exercise program
Widow
Net, is an information and self-help resource for, and by, widows and
widowers. Topics covered include grief, bereavement, recovery, and other
information helpful to people who have suffered the death of a spouse or
life partner.
